What is Language Immersion?
I learned Spanish using this method, it basically started with me going on vacation to Playa del Carmen, while I was there I started using my basic Spanish for simple activities such as ordering meals, shopping, asking for directions, but it felt so amazing to be able to communicate and I just wanted to learn more and more, to learn about the people, to learn about how they thought, how they viewed the world and their culture. Plus people in Playa are so used to foreign people, they are so helpful and understanding, and even though most people there speak English, they really value the effort of a foreign person trying to communicate, I loved Spanish so much, that when I went back to Canada I took Spanish lessons because I felt like I was learning so much during my stay in Mexico, I wanted to keep learning, but learning Spanish in a classroom was all so repetitive, my teacher was not even a native speaker, it was not real Spanish! this experience took me back to my high school Spanish classes. So I did my research and understood why being in an immersion environment, even if only for a few weeks, months, etc. is absolutely instrumental. I understood why it felt so good to learn in such a natural way.
Language immersion, or simply immersion, is a method of teaching a second language in which the learners’ second language is the medium of instruction.
So, I really enjoyed my vacation down there, loved the cuisine, I had fallen in love with the culture, people and the language so, I had seen some good deals on property that caught my attention, I called the realtor, got more info, went down to see it all for myself and decided to buy a house in Playa del Carmen, I own a business that doesn’t require me to stay in the country all year round, so I took my wife who had also fallen in love with Spanish, and we started our own adventure of becoming fluent speakers of this fabulous language and trust me, getting away from the cold winters in Canada came in handy as well.
