CIRQUE DU SOLEIL IN THE RIVIERA MAYA: “JOYA” AN EXQUISITE EXPERIENCE YOU CANNOT MISS
Imagine a nice dinner and Champagne while being entertained by no less than the amazing Cirque du Soleil! Well we have good news from our fellow Canadian venture show, this will all be possible in the Riviera Maya when a custom-made theater and year-round show debuts in November.
“The setting is the most intimate custom-built theater of all the Cirque du Soleil resident theaters in the world,” President and Chief Executive Daniel Lamarre said in a statement.
Renderings of the 600-seat theater, which will be named the Vidanta Theater, show a building with wings set over a giant cenote. The design and materials are meant to represent the beauty of the Riviera Maya jungle habitat.
“Joya” will be the first permanent production in Latin America for Cirque du Soleil.
‘An intimate setting’
“It was designed specifically for Riviera Maya, The show’s planning has taken four years. “We were asked by Grupo Vidanta to imagine something different, new and unprecedented for this destination,” he said. “When done, the theater will be the best theater in Mexico in terms of construction and design.” Even the title of the show, “Joya”, refers to the fusion of wisdom and beauty in the same subject: “Throughout the performance, the granddaughter of an alchemist will discover the joy and wisdom to share an extraordinary experience in an unexpected place. They will make a journey to discover hidden in the mangroves, passing treasure for future generations, “he said of the show with ticket purchase includes a traditional dinner so fine dining and champagne service will be integrated within the show’s performance.
Where and when?
Joya will be opened starting November 8, 2014, at the Theater at Cirque du Soleil in the Riviera Maya. Tickets will be priced from $65-225 dollars.
Cirque will pay commissions to agents who book tickets for their clients in advance; tickets also will be available at a number of resorts in the area.
“The show is open to everyone, from our resort guests to local people, all other hotels and everyone in the community,” Moran said. “We want to be part of this landscape.” By coincidence, this year marks Cirque du Soleil’s 30th anniversary as well as Grupo Vidanta’s 40th anniversary.
A little history about Cirque Du Soleil
“Cirque du Soleil. A Canadian company that clearly defines modern day circus, this company has grown exponentially through the years with performances seen by nearly fifteen million spectators world wide”
Stemming from the dream of a group of acrobats, the Cirque du Soleil’s successful history began in 1984, Guy Laliberté was the president, a position that he has continued to occupy. The artistic concept was developed around dramatized circus and street theatre techniques: you can truly feel the vibe and art flowing during the show, along with the poetry shown in the performances. The Cirque du Soleil is further distinguished from the traditional circus by its lack of animals.
In 1997, the Cirque du Soleil inaugurated its international headquarters, le Studio, in Montréal, its unique centre for creation and production. New shows including the aquatic “O”, a second resident show in Las Vegas, and the Nouba, in Orlando, Florida, were mounted while the previous shows continued to tour throughout the world.
With the launch of the show in the Riviera Maya this could set the difference, taking into account that more than 20 years after The New York times called Cirque du Soleil the “circus of the future,” it has grown from 20 to 5,000 performers in 22 unique shows across more than 40 countries around the world – and that’s just this year. Audiences remain enthralled: Cirque du Soleil’s “Iris” set the record for ticket prices at LA’s Kodak Theatre last year with a $253 ticket. The company’s revenue will reportedly exceed $1 billion this year. Cirque du Soleil enters its third decade having become something all long-standing brands strive to be: consistently remarkable.
