Some of you are laughing when you read the title and some of you are reading this article with genuine concern…
Not a problem that most Canadians are confronted with on a regular basis but something that could be a concern when traveling to a place where a majority of your vacation could be spent enjoying the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean.
So… Sharks in Playa, or no?
The good news is that shark attacks are EXTREMELY rare in this area. There are well over 3 million tourists that grace the beaches of Cancun and the Riviera Maya each year and in the last 10 years there have only been a few incidents that involved sharks – most notably, two attacks near Cancun in 2011 and one in the Riviera Maya in 2013. Prior to 2011, it had been nearly 10 years since a reported shark incident.
The actual odds against getting bit by a shark in this area of the world are staggeringly low. You are more likely to win the lottery than get attacked by a shark. If you buy a lotto ticket, that is… 😉
Watch the video below where I discuss the various aspects of sharks in this area….
So there you have it, folks…. virtually zero chance of getting bitten by a shark here in Playa del Carmen. It’s one of the absolute safest areas in which to swim or engage in water sports. Both in terms of shark, waves, rip currents, etc – all of them almost non existent. Of course, the lack of waves kind of eliminates surfing but it really makes for amazing snorkeling!
Feel free to enjoy the waters around Playa and don’t stress… you’ll be fine. Enjoy your snow and cold free vacation here before you have to make the long trip back to the frozen north land.
Without any of these.
